Open API

An open API is a documented, accessible way for other software to read and write data in your system, without going through a gated partner program.

API stands for application programming interface. It is how one piece of software talks to another. An open API is one that is documented and available to you and to developers you choose, rather than locked behind a vendor's partner approval process.

In veterinary software this is a big deal. Many PIMS products either have no API, a read-only API, or one that only approved partners can use. That limits what you can connect and automate.

Why it matters

  • Connect the tools you already use, on your terms
  • Automate busywork like reminders and data sync
  • Build your own reports and dashboards
  • Avoid being stuck with whatever integrations a vendor decides to allow

OpenVPM ships 150+ documented REST endpoints with webhooks and scoped API keys, and the whole system is open source, so there are no partner gates to build on it.
