Data portability

Data portability is the ability to export all of your practice's data in a complete, usable format and take it to another system.

Your practice data includes patients, clients, medical records, invoices, and inventory. Data portability means you can get all of it out, in formats you can actually use, whenever you want. Not a sample. Not a PDF. The real, structured data.

Portability is what makes data ownership real. The AVMA affirms that practices own their data, but ownership only matters if you can act on it. A record you cannot export is not really yours.

OpenVPM keeps a public schema and full export in open formats like CSV and JSON, so your data is portable at any time. The blog post on data ownership goes deeper on why this matters.
